One of the most surprising things about living in Michigan's Upper Peninsula: If you're lucky, the conditions are *just* right, and you happen to be out in the woods, you can see the Northern Lights with your bare eyes! Of course, in-person they look like a hazy sunrise and the vibrant colors really only appear in camera, but still worth it to experience. I've seen them maybe only three times in the past two years, with a lot of clouds/need for sleep getting in the way of other attempts.
My husband randomly woke up at 4 a.m. one day this past spring, saw there was aurora activity and went out to see what he could get. I used his pic as a reference photo for my bat! The bat itself is modeled after the North American long eared bat; which is native to the UP. Unfortunately, white nose fungus has wiped out more than 90% of our bats, so I haven't really seen any flying around.
